This is a little art project that I’ve had on my plate for a while. Seeing as how many of us just submitted to CHI, I thought we could use a bit of humor. These “Deaths, Delays, and Doubts of Academic Projects” are inspired by the Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey.
Thank you to: Gregory Abowd for all of the “D”ebates and “K”een critiques that have contributed to my research in immeasurable ways; Eugene Medynskiy for turning “S” into an engagement, even if it didn’t lead to a paper; Andrew Miller for the pun in “T”; and, Andy Wilson for being cool about being called out in “W.”
If you want, you can download the whole book as a pdf here: Deaths Delays and Doubts of Academic Projects!
Amazing! so much fun to read them. Thank you 🙂
Glad you liked it 🙂
That was really great!
I love your blog Lana. Please don’t ever stop doing this!
Thanks, Judith!
Well Done. I would point out that through all that failure as you deem it. You now know all of those techniques that you can now use for all the alls you would need to do something. That though your first try was a 3 as you put it. That ‘s a 3 higher than the undergrad that does not know all of those techniques. Now you know a battery. You may use your battery whenever you want. Some people have a test. You have a battery of tests and techniques. Some people do not have a battery to use to solve a problem. You have a battery of techniques you can use. Congratulations. Carry on.
Thank you, that’s one of the reasons that I wrote this. I think we are more comfortable talking about success than about setbacks, while the truth is that is all part of the process. Let’s normalize it!
